College Credit Opportunities for Students
Indiana University recognizes that a student's educational journey begins long before stepping on the IU campus. Dual credit courses, AP, IB, and Cambridge International programs provide opportunities for students to earn college-level academic credit while still in high school, and many IU students arrive here after taking coursework at another post-secondary institution. All of these previous learning experiences help prepare students for success at Indiana University, and many can articulate to IU course credit.
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) encompasses all of these various opportunities for students to earn college credit based on learning experiences completed before coming to IU.
Transfer Credit
IU Bloomington accepts transfer credit earned at another regionally-accredited institution in accordance with the transfer credit policies published on the IU Bloomington Admissions website. To learn more about how external transfer credit is articulated to IU coursework, see the IU Bloomington Credit Transfer Service website.
Exam Credit
IU Bloomington faculty have established course credit articulations for a variety of standardized exams and for certain departmental examinations. More information about AP, IB, CLEP credit, and more can be found on the IU Bloomington Exam Credit website.
Military Credit
Current and former U.S. service members may be eligible for additional credit based on military coursework, military training, DSST exams, and Excelsior College exams. For details, please see the IU Bloomington Office of Admissions and visit the Center for Veteran and Military Students. The O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs also has an online resource dedicated to military and veteran students who are interested in earning a master's degree.
Degree Articulations
Through ongoing collaboration with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and other public institutions in the state, Indiana University has developed pathways to make it easier for students to earn a baccalaureate degree at IU after beginning their education at one of our partner institutions. The IU Bloomington Degree Articulations website contains detailed information about the Indiana College Core (ICC), Transfer Single Articulation Pathways (TSAPs), and Guaranteed Admission Agreements (GAAs).
Other Types of Credit for Prior Learning
Policies for awarding credit based on other types of previous learning experiences vary by program and are determined by the faculty of each academic unit. The IU Bloomington Prior Learning Assessment website provides links to individual school policies.
